Were sozin and roku gay

In the legend of Korra comic, Kya says that in the Fire nation Homosexuality was tolerated until Firelord Sozin banned it. Challenging Avatar Roku in the palace. Sozin and Avatar Roku were best friends in their youth. They even shared the same birthday and celebrated it together. However, their friendship was strained when Sozin became the Fire Lord and Roku became a fully realized Avatar. Roku step out of line in his eyes and Sozin left him to die and made his image an enemy of the state. I never like when writers try to give some homophobic or racist character a cause for it because that's not really how it works in real life.
